« Natural » phosphorus removal in water : pilot testing

27 May 2020

Phosphorus remains an important element to remove in water, to avoid eutrophication of natural environments.

This treatment step remains a challenge for small treatment plants (constructed wetlands, ponds, etc.), diffuse sources (runoff and drainage water) and surface water (water bodies, canals, etc.).

As part of the development of its services and environmental ecotechnologies for water treatment, Naturem Solutions relies on the natural “driver” of phosphate retention in soils and sediments: sorption on mineral substrates.

Thanks to part funding from the Walloon Region, we commissioned Cebedeau to carry out laboratory and pilot tests on different active substrates and types of water, spread over several months.

The obtained results now complement our pre-existing expertise on this topic, which we have already been able to propose to industrial customers. This type of (post)treatment on a bed of active substrate does not require continuous injection of reactant or electrical equipment. It can be combined with treatment wetlands, natural wetlands with focus on biodiversity or landscaping, which perfectly fits our definition of “nature-based solution”.
